GANGTOK, 21 Aug: Bhasa Manyata Diwas was celebrated here at Nepali Sahitya Parishad Bhawan yesterday with the HRDD Minister, NK Pradhan, as chief guest accompanied by DB Yakha as guest of honour.
The observance began on a solemn note with the house observing a two-minute silence to mourn the death of NSP member, RK Rai.
In his welcome address, the NSP vice-president, Chunilal Ghimirey, highlighted the significance of the day, recording it to be an achievement of Nepali culture and language, reflecting the pride of entire community.
As a gesture towards acknowledging contributions made towards the development of Nepali culture and language, the day felicitated Nandu Tiwari of Church Road, NR Bhattari of 6th Mile, Tadong, TB Rai of West Sikkim, Raj K Shrestha and Sanu Subba. They were each presented with a shawl, token and citation.
The felicitation programme was followed by the release of books- ‘Sandarva Nepali Bhasa- Shudh Lekhne Kehi Niyam Haru’ by Chandra Dulal, ‘Bichop Khandakabya’ by Gopal Dhakal and ‘Purwadhar Sahitik Patrika’ by Chandrapani Bhattarai and Tika Dhungel.
The observance then moved to the highlight event of the day – a debate organized in the memory of Jeewan Theeng on the topic, ‘Are educational institutes responsible for the deteriorating status of Nepali Language?’
Himali Sangam Sewa Samity, Tadong, speaking for the topic won the debate beating the Journalist Club of Sikkim. The best speaker title was awarded to Punya Koirala of the winning team.
Dr. Shanti Chettri, in his talk on Nepali language, informed that before 1965, education in schools in Sikkim was in the Nepali medium. Later, it was realized that schools should not remain confined to Nepali language and English medium was adopted.
The HRDD Minister, in his address, credited former Chief Minister, Nar Bahadur Bhandari, and the Lok Sabha MP at the time, DK Bhandari, for the substantial roles they played in winning Constitutional recognition for Nepali language.
“And now, it is the responsibility of the people to work for the upliftment of the language and give justice to efforts made to achieve the recognition,” he stressed. He also informed that the Department has considered appointing Nepali language teachers for all schools.
