NSD conducts theatre workshop for Gangtok students

GANGTOK, 05 Aug: Thirty-five students from schools in and around Gangtok are presently undergoing a Children Theatre Workshop at Burtuk Junior High School. The workshop began on 01 August.
The workshop is been organized by the National School of Drama [NSD] in association with Kaala Multimedia Centre [KMC], Gangtok and will continue till 30 August. The workshop has students from 8 to 15 years age group.

Similar workshops are underway at other north-eastern states. Upon conclusion of the workshop, groups from all north-eastern states will present their plays in the North-Eastern Theatre Festival scheduled to be held in Kolkata from 10 to 13 September.
Addressing a press conference today, the Camp Director from NSD, Dinesh Yadav, informed that the workshop is especially for the north-eastern states to highlight and take the vibrant culture of the region to other parts for cultural interaction.
He further mentioned that the children in the region have immense potential for theatre, so the other objective was to provide exposure and platform to children of the region.
“Our idea is to bring out the natural talent of the children and not to impose anything on them,” he adds.
Mr Yadav informed that at the Gangtok workshop they are preparing a play on a Rabindranath Tagore’s poem, adopted Nepali language ‘Jutta ko Aviskar’ having cultural flavour of Sikkim to present at the Kolkata festival.
He further informed that last workshop for Sikkim was conducted at Mangan, where ‘Alibaba ra Chalis Chor’ was prepared and presented at the NE Theatre Festival held at New Delhi.
He mentioned that Sikkim children have immense potential and talent and could do better in the field of theatre.
The Director of KMC, Ranjit Singh, informed that the invitation for the workshop was given to schools around the state but maximum entries were received from the east district.
He further informed that the workshop is being carried out after school hours so that they do not hamper studies.
Mr Singh expressed that the state has huge potential in theatre but it has not able to reach to the desired level.
The workshop is also being assisted by the cultural teacher of Burtuk JHS, Pramila Chettri.
