Gangtok, 28 Apr [IPR]: Health Minister AK Ghatani inaugurated an annexure constructed for the Emergency Ward at STNM Hospital here today. Built at an estimated cost of Rs 39 lakhs, with an area of 1,500 square feet, the 20-bedded annexure is equipped with a washroom for ladies and gents, medical store room and staff duty cabin.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister asked the Health Secretary and the Medical Superintendent, STNM Hospital, to have a disaster response team ready at all times and remain equipped for any untoward situations. He also asked them to direct CMOs in all the districts to remain well prepared as well.
The Minister also asked the Medical Superintendent to find appropriate premises at STNM Hospital and start an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as soon as possible.
“Though our 1000-bedded hospital at Sokethang in nearing completion, but to counter the patients and give services to them we should have it soon,” he added. The Minister also asked the officials to find an appropriate place in the STNM Hospital and start a separate Operation Theatre for Ophthalmology.
During the function, the Minister also thanked the Chief Minister on whose vision and initiative the new infrastructure was possible.
The Government has given maximum priority to health and education in the state therefore he expected that the doctors and medical staff will provide the patients with quality services and work compassionately.
In the same breath, he added that STNM has been facing shortage of doctors and other medical staffs and specialists as well as senior doctors doing duty in the emergency ward for which he thanked all of them and also assured that in the near future the shortage of doctors and the medical staff will be taken care of by the government. He also added that as of now the available doctors should take it as a service and not duty and work, and assured that government and the department will do everything possible for them.
The Minister also asked the staffs to keep the hospital area neat and clean and work with full cooperation and teamwork.
On the occasion, the Minister also released car passes for vehicles entering STNM Hospital which means from now on only vehicles with the car pass will be allowed to station their vehicles inside the hospital campus.
The function also saw Health Secretary Dr. K Bhandhari and MS Dr. KB Gurung placing some grievances about the shortage of doctors and staffs in the hospital but at the same time promising to give quality services to the patients and the people of Sikkim by using the available resources to the optimal.
The Minister has given them full assurance that the crunches that STNM and the doctors as well as the staff of the hospital has been taken heed of and they will be taken care of, the government and the department will give full cooperation and try and solve the problems, he affirmed.
The Minister Mr. Ghatani on the occasion remembered the victims of the earthquake that hit the neighboring country of Nepal on 25th April 2015 and observed 2 minutes silence for the departed souls.
