Regional workshop reviews Mid Day Meal Scheme

GANGTOK, 17 Jan: A two-day Regional Workshop for preparation of annual work plan and budget 2013-14 for Mid Day Meal and review of the implementation of the scheme was inaugurated by the Human Resource Development Department Minister, NK Pradhan here today.
This workshop is being organized by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in the coordination with the HRDD, government of Sikkim. The programme is being attended by officials and representatives from Ministry of HRD, different North Eastern States including Sikkim and West Bengal and from other concerned organizations.
In his inaugural address, the HRDD Minister mentioned that Sikkim has been doing well in the education sector due to the priority given to this sector by the state government. He informed that the state government has been spending 20% of its budget on education and working with its full force to provide education to all.
Mr Pradhan pointed out that this workshop was very important in order to prepare a good plan and strategies for the long term development of education. He stated that everyone should give top priority to education and nothing should be taken for granted.
The Minister urged the senior officials of the HRD Ministry to consider the problems faced by Sikkim due to various reasons. On the same, he expressed his hope that the state will get a positive response from the Ministry.
HRD Ministry Director [MDM], Gaya Prasad spoke briefly on the Mid Day Meal scheme and informed about the initiative taken by the Ministry so far and future initiatives to be taken. He urged officials from different states to provide a better annual work plan for the success of the scheme in their respective areas by providing proper nutrition to the children for their better health.
In his welcome address, the HRDD Secretary, CS Rao gave a brief presentation on the state data and initiatives and programmes taken up by the state government in the education sector. He highlighted the achievements of the state government in education, schools existing within walking distance of a child, re-introduction of pre-primary schools, timely distribution of text books, uniforms, school bags, shoes etc and state government’s schemes for the students.
Speaking on Mid Day Meal, the Secretary stated that the department has been putting all its effort for the success of the scheme by following the guidelines of the Ministry. He also urged for discussions on the problems faced by the state to bring out fruitful results.
The inaugural session concluded with the vote of thanks by HRDD Deputy Director, TT Bhutia, which was followed by the technical sessions of the workshop. The workshop is scheduled to be concluded tomorrow.
