Labour Deptt conducts workshop on BOC Workers Acts


GANGTOK, 18 Jan: The Labour Department organized a seminar /workshop at the work site under Lanco InfoTech at Singtam, Sirwani today. The main aim of the programme was to educate the workers regarding their rights, duties and benefits under the various labour laws, informs a press release.
The programme was attended by, Dy Commissioner, Labour Department, DS Kunwar, Labour Inspector, Tashi Pintso Mapen, the Project head and other officers of the project.
The Dy. Commisioner highlighted and also directed the principal employers and contractors regarding deduction of 1% cess from the total estimated cost of construction as per section 3 of the Building and Other Construction Workers (Regulation) of Employment and Conditions of Service Act, 1996 and BOC Workers Welfare Cess Act 1996 and under the directives of the Supreme Court of India, the release mentions. He informed that such kind of programmes will also be held in other districts for the registered workers.
The chief guest, member of Sikkim Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board, Hari Chettri, stressed on registration of workers under the Act and appealed to the workers to come forward and learn about their rights.
Under the provisions of the Act, the Labour Department distributed one woollen blanket and a hot case each to the 269 registered workers in the programme, the release adds.
