NAMCHI, 12 Sept: A handy-boy who had joined work barely three days ago was killed in a truck mishap here at Bharikhola [13th Mile] on the Melli-Jorethang highway this morning. The lad, whose dead body was recovered after an extensive search, remains unidentified thus far. The driver, 22-year-old Ram Rai of Bhaktinagar, Siliguri, has sustained grievous injuries.
A mishap occurred at around 11 a.m., when the truck [WB-73C-0856] ferrying a load of cement bags went off the road at Bharikhola and plunged 150 feet down into the Rangeet.
Soon after the accident Jorethang Police personnel and members of the South-West Taxi Drivers Association, Jorethang, rushed to the spot and began search and rescue operations. The driver was evacuated to the Jorethang PHC for first aid and then referred to the district hospital at Namchi where he is currently undergoing treatment.
The handy-boy was already dead by the time the rescuers reached the spot and managed to extract his body which had been weighed down by cement bags. The body has been recovered and sent to the Namchi District Hospital for autopsy. As mentioned, he has not been identified thus far.
Meanwhile, the Police have registered a case at Jorethang PS under Section 279/ 337/ 304A of the IPC.
