GANGTOK, 11 Sept: Padam Singh Subba Apatan Memorial Lecture 2013 on ‘Judiciary in Sikkim: Past & Present’ organized by Sikkim Akademi was held here in the capital today.
Retired Judge of Sikkim High Court, AP Subba, was the main speaker of the programme, which was chaired by the Speaker, KT Gyaltsen as the chief guest. On the occasion, the Sikkim Akademi also felicitated Justice Subba. He is the first Sikkimese High Court Judge.
Delivering the lecture, Justice Subba spoke about the harsh trials and ways of delivering justice practiced in ancient Sikkim as well as other parts of the country and the world. He spoke in detail on the judiciary system of ancient and post-merger Sikkim.
Justice Subba further stressed upon the need to write and read the history of the state. He also advised law students to work on documenting the history of judiciary in Sikkim.
In his address, the Speaker congratulated Sikkim Akademi for conceiving such a programme to celebrate Padam Singh Subba and his contributions towards literature, art, culture and the Limboo language.
Sikkim Akademi president, Pempa Tamang stated that the Akademi is trying its best to hold this event every year. A compilation of all the lectures will also be published in future, he added.
The programme was also attended by Sikkim University Vice-Chancellor, Prof TB Subba, family members of Late Subba, lecturers and students of Sikkim University and Sikkim Law College among others.
