GANGTOK, 10 May: A fortnight long series of career counseling-cum-psychometric test program for government school students was inaugurated by Commerce & Industries Minister Neeru Sewa at Tikaram Niraula Senior Secondary School, Central Pendam, East Sikkim yesterday.
Organized by the Directorate of Capacity Building in coordination with the Human Resource Development Department in partnership with Infoyoung India, New Delhi, the programme was attended by 576 senior students from Tikaram Niraula SSS, Rangpo Senior Secondary School, Duga Secondary School and Syaplay Sardarey School. The counseling programe, an official press release informs, will conclude at Sombaria Senior Secondary School, West Sikkim on 24 May, 2013.
In her address, the Minister appealed to the students to take the program seriously and proactively engage in discussion with the resource persons to understand opportunities available to them and understand professions they have an aptitude for.
She informed that the government has been providing many facilities and creating ample opportunities for students, and that it was now for the students to seize the opportunities and benefit from them.
Pointing out the job prospects already created in Sikkim, she mentioned that the many Pharmaceutical companies with units in Sikkim were employing people from outside the State due to dearth of trained local candidates.
Earlier, in his welcome address, TN Kazi, Director, Directorate of Capacity Building, explained that the main objective of the program was to provide senior government school students with the right information on the various career options available for them and to help them choose further education options matching their aptitude and available opportunities.
He further informed that since the State Government has accorded top priority to education , this Career Counseling cum Psychometric Test has been organized for students of Classes X, XI and XII of government schools across all four districts.
The inaugural program was also attended by Subodh Pokhrel, BDO-Duga, local Panchayat members, HRDD officials, Principal and teachers of the School.
The representative from Infoyoung India, Professor Sumanta Sharma made a power-point presentation and highlighted salient features of the career guidance program.
