Affected people endorse Ting-Ting HEP

GANGTOK, 25 July: A section of the people of Tashiding-Yuksom constituency, under the banner of “Block Level Project Protection Committee”, has challenged objections raised against the proposed 96 MW Ting Ting hydel project on the Rathong Chu.
A press release issued by the president and general secretary of the Block Level Project Protection Committee, LP Kafley and Tashi Gyatso Bhutia of Tashiding, has also condemned the religious slant being given to base the protests against the project.

The release contends that the government has “always been considerate” towards the religious sentiments of the people and points out that this has been proved by the various constructions of religious significance underway across the state such as the Buddha Park at Ravangla, the statue of Chenrezig at Sangachoeling, the statue of Guru Padmasambhava constructed at Samdruptse etc.
The release counters that none of those protesting the project are directly affected by it [in that none of them own land in the area] and argues that they should not come in the way of the development and opportunities that this project will bring to the area and the people there.
The release has stresses that the hydel potential of the State should be harnessed and utilized for the benefit of the people.
The release also underlines that the project-developer should fulfill each point recorded in the agreement and ensure that the laborers are paid as per the Schedule F [as was assured at the public hearing for the project], which shall also be monitored by the Power Project Welfare Committee or the locals here.
The project was welcomed by the people of the area at the public hearing and they stand by it, the release adds.
