MISUSE OF GOVERNMENT VEHICLES TO BE REPORTED
GANGTOK, 09 Nov: A couple of years ago the state government had issued a directive which banned the purchase of new vehicles by the departments.
This was taken as part of the several austerity measures introduced by the state government however it is debatable whether that particular directive was adhered to or not. While there were numerous instances of purchases of new vehicles subsequent to the issuing of such a directive a new step in similar spirits now taken by the government is the constitution of a committee to examine the norms of allotment of government vehicles. In fact just a few years ago a committee had been set up by the government for similar purposes of examining and recommending the procedure and policy of vehicle allotment to officers. It is surprising that the government has felt it necessary to constitute another committee in such a short span of time.
Recently the government constituted a committee under the Secretary, Industries Department, with the purpose of reviewing the existing norms for allotment of government vehicles to officers and also to advise ways and means to bring about rationalization and effective implementation of the vehicle allotment policy of the government. Apparently adhering to the government policy of vehicle allotment has become an issue along with its implementation.
Apart from reviewing the procedure of vehicle allotment to officers in consonance with laid down norms the 4 member committee is also to examine and evaluate the existing norms and recommend the government to incorporate changes if required. More importantly it will direct the government departments to inspect the misuse of government vehicles and submit reports of such misuse to the committee. An annual is to be submitted to the government by the committee.
Other members of the committee include Secretary, Department of Personnel; Controller of Accounts, Finance, Revenue and Expenditure and the General Manager, Transport as member secretary.
