GANGTOK, 06 Nov [IPR]: The Sikkim Manipal University organized its 11th Convocation in the Auditorium hall of new College building at Sikkim Manipal University, 5th Mile Tadong on 5 November.
The Convocation witnessed the passing out of 782 Graduates and Post Graduates student of Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) and Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT), who were awarded degrees in B.Tech, BCA, BBA, M.Tech, MCA, M.SC, MBBS, BSc Nursing, BPT, MPT, Medical M.Sc and MHA. Out of these 782 students, 9 students were conferred with gold and three with silver medals in various disciplines.
The event was attended by the Governor of Sikkim, BP Singh who is the Chancellor of the University, Advisor to the Prime Minister of India, TKA Nair, as the chief guest along with Dr Ramdas M. Pai, Pro- Chancellor, SMU, Brig. SN. Mishra, VC, SMU, Dr. R.N. Salhan, Pro-VC, SMU and Dean, SMIMS, Namrata Thapa, Registrar, SMU on the dais along with the parents, students and ther faculty members.
The programme began with the Academic procession in the formal order lead by the students of College of Nursing, Graduates and Post graduate students followed by other dignitaries on the dais.
The Governor, Balmiki Prasad Singh declared the Convocation open followed by the lighting of ceremonial lamp and invocation by the students. While congratulating the students, he encouraged the students to achieve higher pedestals of fame and embark upon the path of success. SMU, as he said is the harbinger of higher education and health care services and also applauded the role played by its faculty members in making this into a centre of excellence.
Further, he mentioned that excellence is one of those qualities that is developed by the sheer exercise of will power, and in the same manner, he also urged the students to be committed in their excellence inked with fair value which would reward them throughout their lives.
The chief guest in his address said that SMU is a model of public-private partnership in the country, which is providing quality education in health care and other areas of human endeavour. The SMU’s vision of global leadership in human development, excellence in education and health care, today supposed to be the most important endeavour to build a knowledge society. He also asked the students to utilize the knowledge acquired in the interest of the people and more forward on the path of progress.
Welcoming the delegates, Pro-Chancellor, SMU in his address expressed that Manipal Group having realized the need and urgency in providing education and health care needs to the Indian community, took up this challenge by starting education right from primary stage to professionals levels. Its vision took the initiatives to spread the wings to the North East States and thus ventured to Sikkim. This University has been able to contribute in a large measure to the availability of quality education and health care facilities to the people of North East with the helping hand of the Government of Sikkim, he added.
Other highlights included the released of SMU Annual Report. Later, programme concluded with the Vote of thanks proposed by Registrar, SMU,Namrata Thapa and declaring of the convocation closed by the Chancellor.
