USFC takes in State Sports Academy and Namchi Sports Hostel as its U-17 and U-14 teams


ASSOCIATION FORMALISED IN OFFICIAL TIE-UP WITH SPORTS & YOUTH AFFAIRS DEPTT 
GANGTOK, 02 Aug: State Sports Academy [SSA] and Namchi Sports Hostel [NSH] have now become Uro Sikkim United Football Club’s U-17 and U-14 teams respectively. In a tie-up with the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, students of both these academies will now be playing as USFC players in state and national level tournaments. Both these academies have a set of thirty players each at present.
After qualifying for the I-League, it is mandatory for the USFC to have its own U-17 and U-14 teams. The tie-up was announced in a short function held here at Paljor Stadium, which was attended by HRDD Minister, NK Pradhan and Secretary of Sports and Youth Affairs, Karma P Bhutia and USFC co-owner, Bhaichung Bhutia.
Addressing the function, USFC CEO, Bhaichung informed that Nike was the official kit sponsor of the club, so the players of these academies would get the best quality kits similar to what the club’s senior team was getting. The USFC also wants to provide better and wider exposure to these junior teams to encourage them further, he said adding that the U-17 teams would also take part in the U-17 I-League.
The club will bring part time coaches to train these junior teams and also try to send local coaches to train outside, mentioned Bhaichung.
Informing that this tie-up is for a period of 2 years, he expressed hope that it would continue longer. He also shared that the club would not interfere in the selection process of players for these hostels but would provide technical support if required by the department.
Stating that the USFC has signed seven players from the Sports Academy this time, Bhaichung expressed that it was the duty of the club to support the state government’s efforts in promoting the game.
“This tie-up is just the beginning of the process to make Sikkim the most sporting state in the country”, said Bhaichung sharing his dreams to make USFC the best club in the country and to have the best football academy of the nation here in Sikkim.
The club is also in talks with the Sports department to organize an inter-school football tournament on a grand scale with the aim to discover hidden talents from across the state, he informed and added that the club would be providing full support to the department for this purpose.
Addressing the function, Minister NK Pradhan appreciated USFC’s initiative for coming forward to show a better path to young footballers of these academies. “It is great that Bhaichung has come forward to guide, support and help players by providing benefits and exposure”, stated Mr Pradhan.
Urging the young players of the two academies to work hard the Minister said that USFC’s promotion to the I-League was not only a matter of pride for the club but for the entire state.
SYA Secretary, Mr Bhutia mentioned that this tie-up with Bhaichung’s club was a big opportunity for young footballers of the academies to pave the way for a better future. He stated that this tie-up would fill the gaps that the department could not fill in terms of providing better exposure to these players.
The Secretary also urged the players to take good care of the kits provided by the club.
Responding to media queries, Bhaichung said that the academies would play under the USFC banner outside the state and the players would also play for the club in small tournaments across the country. He further added that players from these academies would be trained separately but if recommended by coaches some players would be trained along with the senior team.
On the provision of land by the state government to set up Bhaichung’s academy, the Minister informed that the process was in the final stage and two plots of land at Assam Lingzey and Kitchudumra in South Sikkim had been identified for this purpose.

Sikkim readies 100-member contingent for NE Games


GANGTOK, 15 March: The Department of Sports & Youth Affairs is sending a 100-member contingent to represent Sikkim at the upcoming 26th edition of the North East Games to be held from 20 to 23 March at Aizwal in Mizoram.
The state teams will take part in seven disciplines - athletics, boxing, badminton, football, table tennis, taekwondo and volleyball and will be led by Assistant Director, CL Rai.
The contingent members were shortlisted on the basis of their performance in the recently concluded State Level North East Games held at Paljor Stadium, Tashi Namgyal Academy ground and Tathangchen Secondary School ground from 12 to 14 March.
The team will be leaving for the tournament on Saturday.

Bhaichung Stadium at Namchi to get a Rs 35 crore revamp


NAMCHI, 15 Feb: Bhaichung Stadium (Alley Ground) will soon be sporting a new look on the lines of an International standard football ground with the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs allocating Rs. 35 crore with the time period of 36 months for its construction.
Local contractor of Namchi, Shanker Agarwal has been given the project of the stadium’s construction which will have two sides with gallery while the other two sides will have an open green gallery. Artificial turf will replace the natural grass in this revamp.
The construction of this stadium will be done under the supervision of HRD Department in coordination with S&YA Department. Excavation work of the ground has started and today Secretary S&YA Department, Karma D. Bhutia along with architects and engineers from HRD Department visited the site and discussed the plan of the stadium.
Later, JD (S/W) S&YS, Kamal Chettri who is also the Nodal supervisor of this project informed that the excavation work has begun and soon the Bhaichung stadium will be at par with International standards football stadium.
He further informed that owing to its scenic location it was decided that two sides of the ground would come up as green galleries. Meanwhile, footballers of Namchi Sports Hostel and SAI will be practicing at the Singithang ground.
The Chief Minister’s Gold Cup, a premier soccer tournament that has been organised by the South District Football Association (SDFA) for the past many years between September-October will take place at the Jorethang Mela Ground for the next three years.

Run for Unity this Republic Day


GANGTOK, 13 Jan: A ‘Run for the Unity of the Country’ event is being organized by the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs [SYA], Namchi, in association with District Administrative Centre [Namchi] and Nehru Yuva Kendra [Namchi] on the occasion of Republic Day on 26 January at Namchi.
The decision to organize this event was taken at a meeting held at the Namchi DAC and attended by the officials and representatives from SYA, DAC and NYK on 11 January.
The event will have Men’s Open Half Marathon of 21 kms for the 14-35 age-group and a prize money of Rs. 15,000 for the winner, Rs. 10,000 for the runner-up and a third prize of Rs. 7,000. The Women’s Open, a 15 km race, again for the age-group of 14-35 yrs, has prizes of Rs. 10,000, Rs. 7,000 and Rs. 5,000 for first, second and third positions respectively. The final event will be the U-14 boys and girls Cross Country Race with Rs. 5000, Rs. 3000, and Rs. 2000 as first, second and third prizes respectively.
The Sports & Youth Affairs [Namchi] Assistant Director, NK Chettri informs that the main objective of the event is to promote national integration and unity among the people and also to encourage the youth and children towards sports.

The Search for More Bhaichungs begins 26 Dec


GANGTOK, 21 Dec: The selection trails for the ‘Search for More Bhaichung’ scheme for the North and East districts will be held on 26 and 27 December. Meanwhile, the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs is also conducting the selection trials for U-14 boys on 26 December and U-17 boys on 27 December. The trials are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on both days.

GANGTOK, 23 Oct: Registered sports associations in the State can submit incentive claims of their players covering the period from the year 2008 to 31 March 2011 with the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs on or before 10 November.

NSS grants handed out with call to spend judiciously


GANGTOK, 24 May:  A total of Rs. 37,53,600 was distributed to 74 educational institutions by the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs, National Service Scheme [NSS] Cell, today at a function held here at Paljor Stadium.
This grant-in-aid was provided to senior secondary schools, colleges, Sanskrit Mahavidyalayas, Sanskrit Uccha Mahavidyalayas, Shedas, ITIs and TTIs from around the state to carry out ‘special camps’ and various other NSS activities.
The cheques were handed over by the Secretary, Karma P Bhutia, and Additional Director, RK Rai, to the NSS programme officers from different institutions.
