500 Big Foots to walk in Darjeeling on Friday

GANGTOK, 24 May: 500 students and supporters will walk from Raj Bhavan to Chowrastha in Darjeeling wearing ‘Big Foot (representing the feet of Yeti, a legend from the Himalayan folklore) Shoes’ as part of the Big Foot campaign on 25 May. The walk will begin from 10 in the morning from Raj Bhavan and will culminate at Chowrastha.
A press release informs that the campaign which is organised to symbolise solidarity on the need to keep the indigenous oral story and folklore alive will also make its way to the Limca Book of records 2013 for the maximum number of people wearing the same kind of shoes at the same time and the same place.
The walk is part of the Big Foot Campaign organised by Acoustic Traditional, an independent Bangalore-based, non-profit organisation, led by young indigenous people, working towards the promotion and conservation of oral storytelling and tribal oral history, especially of mountain and forest communities.
The Yeti is relevant to the local culture in many different ways. Almost all oral history suggests (Mundums of the Kiranti/ evident in Bongthism of the Lepchas) that man actually received wisdom from the animals.  Many Lepcha folktales suggest that Yetis were friendly beings, although wild in their nature. In fact, there is also a shared perception among the shamans that Yeti and Ban Jhankris are one and the same; that they are not real beings in flesh, but rather guides to the spirit world – the ultimate and the original shamans from whom shamanism begins.
The “Big Foot Walk” will celebrate the importance of legends in sustaining a community’s cultural, historical, spiritual and scientific legacies, the release adds.

Devastating fire breaks out in Darjeeling market

Darjeeling, 20 April: A devastating fire raged through the main market square of Darjeeling town in West Bengal last night, bringing back memories of the horror of 1971 when the same stretch was razed to the ground.
The fire broke out at around 2.15 am at MP Road today.
Local residents believe that the fire started from a wooden shop, the floor of which gave way and spread rapidly after two LPG cylinders burst in the restaurant on the ground floor of the same building. With the area densely crowded with wooden shops, the fire spread quick and fast.
Local residents; Fire tenders from Darjeeling, Kurseong, Kalimpong, Bijanbari; Green Force of the Dera Saccha Sauda; Army (21 Madras and 11 Gorkha Regiment) together managed to contain the fire by 7am. With acute water scarcity, private water tankers pitched in to help.
“Around 90 shops have been gutted. Though estimates have not been made of the loss, it would be to the tune of above Rs. 2 Crores,” said Saumitra Mohan, District Magistrate, Darjeeling. Most of the schools remained closed today.
“The cause of the fire has not been ascertained. Prima facie it could be from a short circuit,” stated a fire officer. “I remember the fire in 1971. The same stretch had been gutted. I had then helped as a student,” added Sher Bahadur Rai, a retired army personnel.

Sikkim-GJM begins awareness campaign to explain GJM-WB Govt deal

GANGTOK, 16 June: Gorkha Janmukti Morcha’s Sikkim-unit has begun an awareness campaign here to inform interested people about the finer details of the recent arrangement arrived at between the party and the West Bengal State Government.
The awareness programme kicked-off from Kamrang near Namchi with the GJM’s Sikkim members meeting with the public, a GJM press release informs.
The Sikkim-GJM president, Bhawani Pradhan, addressing today’s meeting, announced that the Sikkim unit was ready to welcome the “deal” provided that it include Dooars, Terai and Siliguri in the Gorkhaland area, and stressed that the party will carry on with the Gorkhaland demand along with the new arrangement.
Accusing the opposition parties in Darjeeling of trying to misguide Gorkhaland supporters about the bilateral talks, he explained the purpose of his visit as one “to clear such misconceptions among the public”.
He further alleged the opposition group in Darjeeling has always hindered a resolution of the demand for Gorkhaland and appealed to the people not to get swayed by the “false propaganda” of the opposition.
He also appealed for continued support for the GJM chief, Bimal Gurung, who, he claimed, was “a true and committed leader of the Gorkhaland movement”.
