Jhora near Dikchu PHC poses threat to health staff and locals


MANGAN, 15 April:  A second night of heavy shower on 12 April forced the residents of Dikchu New Market and Dikchu PHC staff to spend a sleepless night. As the water flow between the PHC and staff quarters began to flood towards the PHC, the staff had to leave their quarters at night and seek shelter elsewhere. Heavy flow of water towards the Dikchu New Market also scared the people residing in the area into keeping awake all night.
Medical Officer, Dikchu PHC, Dr. Mohan Thapa while speaking to NOW! Informed that it is inconvenient to walk through this jhora for the health staff which is very risky when it rains and there is no alternate foothpath to cross over.  He also informed that the nearby jhora should be trained immediately as there is further risk during the coming rainy season. A view, that the local residents agree with and demand at the earliest.
Meanwhile, the ward panchayat, Kado Lepcha visited the spot and informed that he will submit a report to the District Administration immediately requesting for the needful to be carried out under the NC fund.  The representatives from District Hospital Mangan also visited the spot.

MANGAN, 13 April:  The heavy shower of last night put the staff of Dikchu PHC at risk as the flow of water between the PHC and the staff quarters raged out of control and started overflowing towards the PHC. The Primary Health Centre at Dikchu New Market, North Sikkim is situated at the bottom of the Tanek Bhir where the 18 September earthquake had triggered a landslide which had also damaged some portion of the PHC.
Dr. Mohan Thapa, Medical Officer, Dikchu PHC, while speaking to NOW! informed that the jhora should be trained immediately and also informed that there is further risk during the coming rainy season.

Precarious sink on NH 31A in Gangtok awaits coordination to allow repairs

GANGTOK, 09 Aug: Driving along NH-31A especially in and around Gangtok has renamed an ordeal for quite some time now. Large pot-holes, slush and debris from the temporary patch works makes negotiating vehicles an uncomfortable endeavor here in the capital of the state.
With a major section of road hanging in precarious condition here in Hospital Dara, the busiest part of town, officials from the GREF, Sikkim Police and the line departments and BSNL visited the spot today and tried chalking out a way to solve the problem which is now an “emergency.”

Jhora floods NH31A with debris at Rambi, traffic disrupted

GANGTOK, 17 June: Traffic along NH-31A came to a halt for more than 12 hours starting last night when vehicles on either side of the highway were stranded near Rambi on the West Bengal side after a jhora there broke its banks and brought down water, slush and debris. This is the first NH 31A disruption this monsoon.
The Janmukti Chalak Mahasangh president, Milan Pradhan, informs that heavy rains along the highway on the West Bengal side last night triggered a flash flood in the jhora which flows down from the lower reaches of Darjeeling at 27th Mile, near the NHPC dam site, where it meets the Teesta.

Jhora slices away road near Manbir Colony

GANGTOK, 06 June: A section of the Indira Byepass caved in near Manbir Colony ahead of from DC Office last night when the jhora there broke its banks due to the heavy rainfall.
Three quarters of the road was sliced away by the raging jhora at around 2:30 a.m. it is informed. As is obvious from the accompanying photograph, this section is now closed to vehicular traffic.
A GREF team arrived at the spot early this morning and started restoration works.
B/R Grade II, PC Joshi, of GREF, who is supervising the restoration works, informs that the jhora washed away the culvert under the road resulting in a portion of the road collapsing.
He informed that GREF personnel and labourers have been hard at work at the spot and that temporary restoration to open the road for traffic will be completed by Tuesday evening, weather permitting.
Permanent restoration will take around one month if work progresses smoothly, he added.

CCTVs begin jhora vigil

GANGTOK, 17 March:  In an attempt to discourage dumping of garbage in jhoras across the capital [a perennial problem], the Gangtok Municipal Corporation has installed CCTVs at relevant vantage points across town. Those caught in the act by these surveillance cameras, equipped with night vision, will be identified, publicly exposed and fined, it is informed. 
Speaking to NOW!, Gangtok Mayor, KN Topgay, informed that incriminating footage is proposed to be aired on Nayuma Cable TV which reaches every home in the capital which “will hopefully act as a deterrent".
