GANGTOK, 15 Jan: A nine-member Sikkim Strength Lifting Association will be participating in the 22th edition of Junior, Sub Junior, Senior & Master Federation Cup National Strength Lifting Championship 2014-15 to be held at Guru Ravi Das Gurudwara Ground, Phagwara in Punjab from 23 to 26 January. The state team comprises of Karma Lhamu Bhutia, Leena Chettri, Karishma Subba and Manisha Tiwari in women’s category, while the men’s team has Pema Dorji Bhutia, Dhan Bahadur Tamang, Devendra Basnet, Ram Dhoj Rai and Damber Bahadur Rai.

Sikkim bags 5 medals at National Strength Lifting C'ship
GANGTOK, 04 Sept: Sikkim Strength Lifting Association [SSLA] team has again proved its strength with its impressive performance in the 21st edition of the National Strength Lifting & Inclined Bench Press Championship 2014 held at Midnapur, West Bengal from 21 to 24 August. A 10-member SSLA team has bagged 5 medals in the championship.
Pema Bhutia of Sikkim Armed Police has won gold medal in the Master category [above 45] and also created the new National Record of 120 kg in Inclined Bench Press by breaking his own old record of lifting 115 kg. Similarly, Bhakta Bahadur Chettri and Dhan Bahadur Tamang of SAP bagged gold medals again in the Master category [above 45] in their debut participation.
Bhai Chung- Chung Bhutia of Bojoghari SSS won silver medal in the senior men’s category and Karma Lhamu Bhutia of West Point SSS won bronze medal in the senior women’s category. Likewise, Sonam Dadul Bhutia stood on the 4th position in the senior men’s category. The SSLA team has also won a trophy for the Best Dressed.
SSLA president, Jigme Wangchuk expressed that it was an outstanding efforts to won 5 medals by the small contingent of the state in compare to other big contingents from other states. While appreciating the efforts of the team members, he expressed that the local lifters have lots of opportunity to do much better in the near future. He stated that the local people should support and proud on the team efforts.
President shares that the association has the plan to conduct the state-level competition at Gangtok by inviting the members of different gyms in the state.
SSLA publicity secretary, Rinzing Wangyal Chophel requested the Sports and Youth Affairs Department to provide the cash incentives to medal winners in strength lifting. He added that in the short period of the formation of the SSLA its lifters have already won many medals for the state.
While speaking on the pathetic condition of the government gym, he urged the department to immediately shift it to its old location at White Hall.

Strength-Lifting has a lot to offer: Pema Dorji Bhutia
GANGTOK, 18 Aug: From bodybuilding to strength lifting and going on to serve as a national referee Havaldar Pema Dorji Bhutia of Sikkim Armed Police has come a long way. The former Mr Sikkim is the first national referee from Sikkim in Strength Lifting. After serving as referee for a couple of national level strength lifting championships, he is now working towards bringing out more national referees in strength lifting from Sikkim.
46-year-old Pema Dorji hails from Lingdok-Nampong in East Sikkim and became an inspiration for many young bodybuilders when he won the title of Mr Sikkim in his early 40s in the year 2009.
He started strength lifting last year with his debut performance in the 19th Senior & 11 Master National Strength Lifting & Incline Bench Press Championship in June 2013 in Haryana. In this championship, he not only won a gold medal in Incline Bench Press but also set a National record in 62 kg category of Two Hand Curly event.
During this championship, Pema Dorji also sat for the India Strength Lifting Federation National Referee Examination 2013 and passed in his first attempt with 61% marks and became the first national referee from Sikkim. He is also training many youngsters as the state coach.
Speaking to NOW! he said, "I want to inspire the people and especially the young generation to be concerned about their health and live a healthy life in any age". While mentioning about the scope in strength lifting as a lifter as well as referee, he said that in just one year of the introduction of the strength lifting sport in the state, Sikkim has already produced many players and won medals as well as appreciation. He informed that he is also preparing three men and one woman for the national referee examination to be held later this year.
Pema Dorji served the 20th edition of the Senior National championship as a national referee in February earlier this year. Interestingly, he also won 2 gold medals and Champion of the Champions title in the same championship.

Strength-Lifting team set for national championship
GANGTOK, 14 Aug: A 10-member Sikkim Strength Lifting Association [SSLA] team is all set to participate in the 21st edition of Senior and Master Men & Women National Strength Lifting & Inclined Bench Press Championship to be held at Vidya Sagar Memorial Hall in Midnapur, West Bengal from 21 to 24 August.
The team has Pema Dorji Bhutia, Sonam Dadul Bhutia, Dhan Bahadur Tamang, Tashi Bhutia, Sujay Tamang, Bhakta Bahadur Chettri, Karma Tseten Bhutia, Bhai Chung-Chung Bhutia, Leena Chettri and Karma Lhamu Bhutia. Pema Dorji Bhutia, who is leading the team, will also be serving the championship as a National Judge. The team is scheduled to leave on 18 August for the championship.
In a short function today, SSLA members led by their president Jigme Wangchuk and vice-president, Palden Thendup Bhutia, conveyed their best wishes to the state team by offering khadas.
SSLA publicity secretary, Rinzing Wangyal Chophel informed that two gold medalists from each participating state in this championship will get a chance to participate in an international level competition scheduled to be held in the month of February next year. In this regard, he encouraged the team to put their best efforts to win gold medals in the competition. He also expressed his gratitude on behalf of the association to Rumtek based NGO, Sikkim Social Welfare Youth Association for sponsoring tracksuits for the team members.
Mr Chophel stated that the SSLA has been working to engage youth in healthy and disciplined life through sports and steer them away from anti-social activities and drug abuse. He urged the concerned department to immediately shift the gym to White Hall or some other appropriate space from its present location at Tathangchen. He further urged the Sports and Youth Affairs department to provide cash incentives to the medal winners of Strength Lifting.
Likewise, SSLA treasurer, Rahul Sarda expressed his best wishes to all team members for the championship. He informed that the association has also been planning to conduct a strength lifting competition in the state in the near future.
