Sikkim and Darjeeling join hands to pursue tribal status for all Nepali-speaking Indians

The SDF-helmed State Government of Sikkim and the GJMM-led Gorkha Territorial Administration of Darjeeling have resolved to jointly pursue the demand for tribal status for all Nepali-speaking people of the country. This was announced at a joint press conference addressed by Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling and GTA chief Bimal Gurung in Gangtok today.

Gurung associations meet in Siliguri to discuss demand for tribal status

GANGTOK, 13 June: A delegation of All Sikkim Gurung (Tamu) Buddhist Association [ASGBA] members led by HB Gurung attended a meeting organised by the All India Gurung (Tamu) Buddhist Association [AIGBA], Siliguri, to discuss the demand for tribal status for the community at Salugara yesterday, informs a press release.
The purpose of the meeting, chaired by Colonel Bed Prakash Gurung of Siliguri, was to demand tribal status for Gurungs in the country “to bring uniformity in the cultural and traditional practise of Gurungs, to help and support all Gurungs who are socially and economically weak and also to work and live life on the principles of Gautham Buddha”, the release informs.
