Approaching World Bank, ADB will increase state burden by Rs.5000 claims Bhandari

SPCC TO COME OUT WITH SIKKIM CONGRESS AWAZ
GANGTOK, 06 Nov: The Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee president, NB Bhandari has stated that it is not proper for the state government for seeking assistance in the form of funds from international funding agencies. Addressing a press conference today the party president said that this was not in the interest of Sikkim.
This was in response to the stated move of the government to seek assistance from the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank for the rebuilding process post the 18 September earthquake. Bhandari questioned the wisdom of the state government in approaching these international agencies when the centre was provided all necessary to the state. Seeking assistance from international agencies, he claimed, would put an additional burden of Rs.5000 crore on the exchequer.
Taking a dig on the government Bhandari said that the state was a victim of two kinds of disasters, a natural disaster and a political one. He further said that his recent conviction in a CBI case and term of one month was the starting point of the political disaster hinting that after him, there would be more political big wigs in the state who would face similar charges and conviction. The CBI, he stated, would sooner or later definitely enter the state, he expressed.
While agreeing that the recent earthquake was a natural disaster Bhandari put the responsibility of the extent of damages on the SDF government. He went on to allege that the large number of hydel projects in the state was largely responsible for the degree of destruction that the state had witnessed in the wake of the earthquake.
“We have been protesting since a long time against the huge numbers of hydel projects being developed in the state, but we were fined Rs 50,000 by the Sikkim High Court for obstructing the developmental works; now we have been proved right” he stressed.
Mr Bhandari informed that the meeting of the SPCC today also decided that the SPCC will soon start its mouthpiece, Sikkim Congress Awaz, a monthly newspaper.
