GANGTOK, 06 Nov: The final Technology Awareness Programme on Disease Free Planting materials and Post Harvest Management of Large Cardamom concluded at KVK, Gyalshing, West Sikkim, on 4 November 2011.
The programme was sponsored by National Horticulture Board (NHB), Gangtok and organized by Sikkim State Cooperative & Marketing Federation (SIMFED- ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 22000:2005 certified)) in association with SIBin Group, Gangtok.
The awareness programme was attended by 75 farmers of West Sikkim along with resource persons from Spices Board, Jorethang. The Programme was inaugurated with welcome speech by Project Coordinator, KVK, Gyaba, Gyalshing, West Sikkim,NT Bhutia. At the outset, Centre In-charge of National Horticulture Board,AK Singh, highlighted the activities and different schemes of NHB on cultivation, promotion and post harvest management of horticulture crops along with pattern of assistance for the farmers. He urged the farmers to take the benefit of schemes and come up with viable projects for open and green house cultivation of commercially profitable crops and fruits of the state.
Field Officer, Spices Board, Jorethang Branch,Kuldip Rai, made a detailed power point presentation at the programme on cultivation practice of the crop, its disease and the control measures along with special emphasis on disease free planting materials of Cardamom. He also assured the farmers all possible help in establishing own nurseries as per schemes of Spices board and continue large scale commercial farming through support from NHB. He apprised the farmers about the increasing demand of Large Cardamom.
Inspector, Ginger processing Plant Unit, Birdang, South Sikkim of SIMFED,MN Subba, detailed about the activities of Sikkim State Cooperative & Marketing Federation and its role in areas of market promotion. He informed that SIMFED had been working to connect with the village level farmers in order to procure their horticulture produce and help in fetching good prices for the same. Marketing Inspector, Gyalshing Branch of SIMFED, Deoraj Limboo, also highlighted about the main role of SIMFED in related to procurements of agricultural and horticultural products from the farmers.
The awareness programme proved to be quite beneficial for the farmers as they were apprised on technical knowledge, schemes, training solutions, marketing support and future support all at the same venue at the same platform.
