GANGTOK, 14 Nov: The Press Club of Sikkim has expressed deep gratitude towards Governor Balmiki Prasad Singh on his gesture towards supporting efforts to promote rural reporting in Sikkim.
The Governor, it may be mentioned here, released Rs. 1.50 lakh for the PCS as seed fund to institute an annual award in recognition of exceptional rural reporting.
The financial assistance was received by the PCS President, Bhim Rawat from the Governor during the Children’s Day celebration at Chintan Bhawan today.
A PCS press release issued by its publicity secretary, Nirmal Mangar, informs that this assistance will be maintained in a fixed deposit in the State Bank of India and the interest raised will be utilized to give Gramin Patrakarita Puraskar every year. The Governor, it is informed, has directed that this award be given on the occasion of National Press Day on 16 November every year.
The PCS has welcomed this initiative of the Governor as one which will take journalism in Sikkim to new heights by encouraging journalists towards reporting more on rural issues and highlight the problems and issues of rural areas.
The PCS has decided to give away this award to an outstanding journalist every year for bringing out rural issues and for celebrating rural talents. A selection committee has been constituted for the award, the first of which will be conferred next year.
