GANGTOK, 17 Nov: Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh [BGP] has welcomed the decision of the Mayawati Government to create new states by dividing Uttar Pradesh into four parts and has urged other state governments to initiate similar processes of addressing the long pending demands for creation of new states.
A press release issued by the BGP general secretary, Munish Tamang, conveys the BGP working president, Rev. Enos Das Pradhan’s statement that, “We welcome the UP Cabinet’s decision to divide the state into four separate smaller states. Now other states in India should also follow the example of Uttar Pradesh and help in creating smaller states.”
The release expresses that the BGO is particularly hopeful that the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet move will bring to the national centre-stage the debate about the re-organisation of India and urges that an initiative be taken at the earliest to address demands for Gorkhaland and Telengana as well.
The Parisangh further clarifies that “the present agreement on GTA does not reflect the aspirations of the Gorkhas living in Darjeeling, Dooars and other parts of India and that the agreement between the West Bengal Government and the GJJM should not be held up as an excuse to deny the genuine demand of the Indian Gorkhas for a separate state of Gorkhaland”.
