NAMCHI, 19 Aug: Construction of the Bhaichung Stadium at Alley ground in Namchi is still moving at snail’s pace with only 15-20 labourers engaged at the site at present. The mega project worth approximately Rs 33 crore was started in March 2012.
A team headed by Secretary Sports and Youth Affairs, K. Jaya Kumar, Chief Engineer HRDD and other officers visited the construction site of Bhaichung Stadium in July earlier this year and met the contractor.
The Secretary had issued strict directions to the contractor Shanker Agarwal to increase the number of labourers to 200 to 300 and also instructed him to expedite the construction. He had also said that the department will help the contractor with the funds required. Mr Kumar had further warned the contractor that any further delay could result in blacklisting.
When contacted the contractor said that they were making arrangements to bring in more labourers within this week and speed up work as well. He further informed that if the department provides enough funds then the pace of work could be increased and further delay avoided.
It may be mentioned here that the State Government had sanctioned the project of developing an artificial green turf football ground at Alley ground to be completed by 02 March 2015.
