GANGTOK, 18 Aug: Kiddies’ Corner, an English-medium foundation school situated at Upper Sichey, below Tamang Gumpa, commemorated the 68th Independence Day with a major cleanliness drive at the locality on 16 August.
The drive was conducted to add a ‘different twist’ to the on-going jubilant Independence Day celebrations that were being organized throughout the state that mainly included sports and cultural extravaganzas. The KCS staff and the school students marked the occasion by generating awareness on the need for keeping ones locality clean of plastic items, tetra packs and household garbage that is indiscriminately discarded by many without understanding the importance of a clean and healthy society.
The cleanliness drive, which started after a special assembly in the school premises, was conducted by around 30 children belonging to standard IV and V, teachers and other staff of the school, informs Principal, KCS, Pema Oberoi.
Highlighting the importance of inculcating civic sense amongst the children and the local people of the area, the cleanliness drive was carried out under the theme, “Lets Awaken”.
“We hope that this cleanliness drive will encourage the locals of the area not to leave garbage bags on the road sides that lie unattended for long intervals making the entire road stretch from the Thumi Sambhota school intersection upto the KCS School premises a mess. We hope that this effort of the children will at least generate some civic sense among the people,” said Ms Oberoi.
