GANGTOK, 01 June: Rhenock MLA, Hemendra Adhikari, visited the airport construction site at Pakyong recently where it was found that 12 houses in the area are in critical condition and on the verge of collapse.
In a press release, the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha MLA has accused the Airports Authority of India and the State government of negligence in the construction of the airport at Pakyong which has damaged houses and property of residents of Naya basti situated in the vicinity of the construction site.
During his visit, the residents complained that the AAI has not been taking the issue seriously. They also complained that the authority has not fulfilled its promise to provide employment and contractual work to the educated youth of the affected area either. The people further alleged that resettlement measures have been initiated only for a few and most of the affected are still waiting to be rehabilitated.
Mr Adhikari urged the people to be patient and assured to initiate steps regarding resettlement of the affected families. The MLA has requested the concerned authority to initiate the resettlement of the affected families along with immediate relief measures where required.
