GANGTOK, 03 June: Quick response by the Fire and Emergency Services team late last night prevented a fire from spreading and causing major damage to adjacent houses and property at Dhobi Dhara, near Police Guest House, Diesel Power House Road.
“We got a call at around 11.50 pm and responding immediately, fire brigades with firemen were dispatched to the said address,” informed SS Subba [Assistant Sub Fire Officer], while speaking to NOW! over the phone today. The house was situated at an awkward spot hence reaching the fire hose to the house took some time, he added.
When the fire team reached the house, the fire had already spread to the upper floor of the house, he said and added that they were however able to save all the livestock. There was nothing we could do to save anything from inside the house and mostly everything from documents to furniture was razed in the fire and the house was totally damaged, he stated.
It took the fire team more than two hours to bring the fire under control and 07 trucks of water were used to douse the fire out completely [three fire trucks were already there at the site by the time this team reached], Mr Subba stated. The firefighting went on till around 2.30 a.m. today.
