GANGTOK, 03 June: Laxmi Subba of Assam Lingzey in East Sikkim has set off on a mission towards self reliance and creating employment opportunities for local youth of the area through dairy farming. The foundation stone of Laxmi Milk Processing Unit and dairy farm was laid today by the area MLA, BB Rai at Assam Lingzey.
The function was also attended by State Bank of Sikkim Managing Director, Hem Kumar Chettri and local people of the area.
The project with an estimated cost of around Rs 2.20 crore will come up in an area of 3.5 acres. The project is being supported by the State Bank of Sikkim.
Speaking to media persons, Ms Subba mentioned that she has the vision not only to be self reliant but to create proper jobs for atleast 15 unemployed youth of the area through this project apart from other job opportunities. She has planned to complete her dream project in a period of 1 year.
Ms Subba has been working in the field of dairy farming since 2006 and was collecting 300 liters of milk everyday from farmers of Assam Lingzey to supply to Gangtok market before starting her own unit. She plans to bring 20 cows of better breed after the farm is constructed.
“With the completion of my project, I plan to collect at least 1500 liters every day from the area to supply to the Sikkim Milk Union,” she shared. She informed that she has already had a talk with the Sikkim Milk Union and Animal Husbandry Department about the project.
Ms Subba stated that there is a lot of scope and opportunities in dairy farming and many local youths of the area have adopted dairy farming following her example while many have expressed their desire to work with her.
Area MLA Mr Rai shared that the CM also has the vision to make people employable and self-reliant through dairy farming. On the same, he added that it is an encouraging initiative that Ms Subba has taken not only to fulfill the demand of milk in the local market but also to create opportunities for local people. He expressed his best wishes for the success of the project.
Likewise, SBS MD, Mr Chettri stated that the bank came forward to support this project after seeing the hardwork and successful record of Ms Subba in dairy farming. He further added that the success of the project would be beneficial for the people of Assam Lingzey.
