Namchi, 05 June [IPR]: The State-level World Environment Day celebrations 2014, themed “Small Islands and Climate Change” organized by the Forest Department was held at Namchi Government Girls Senior Secondary School today.
Power Minister Dorjee Dazom Bhutia was present as the chief guest accompanied by Forest Minister Tshering Wangdi Lepcha; Ministers GM Gurung, Tulsi Devi Rai, SB Subedi, Arjun Kr. Ghatani, Somnath Poudyal; MLAs, Zilla Adhyaksha of all the four districts, HoDs and other nodal officers.
The daylong celebration commenced with the ceremonial plantation programme in the school campus led by the chief guest. PCCF cum Principal Secretary, Forest, Arvind Kumar, welcomed the gathering at the onset of the program while laying emphasis on the need to preserve the environment. He informed the gathering about the various environment-related schemes under the State Government including the ‘Paryavaran Mahotsav’, Ten Minutes to Earth and State Green Mission.
The program also saw the release of publications such as the Panda Newsletter, posters of Sikkim’s flora and fauna, books, calendars and CDs followed by the screening of a snippet on Sikkim’s Organic Mission.
The chief guest addressed the gathering highlighting the several accolades and accomplishments achieved by the State government for its environment conservation efforts which have set an example for the entire nation.
Later, he handed over the prestigious Chief Minister’s Green School Rolling Trophy-cum-State Green School Awards 2014 to Namchi Government Girls Senior Secondary School and other subsequent winners in this category. Prizes for Painting and Slogan Writing competition were also declared and handed over by him.
The program was also addressed by the Forest Minister and Officer on Special Duty (Environment & Soil Conservation) BK Tiwari. The program concluded by a vote of thanks by Additional Director KNP, Uday Gurung.
