On the occasion of World Environment Day 2014, Governor of Sikkim, Shriniwas Patil conveyed the following message.
“As we celebrate the World Environment Day on 05 June every year, it reaffirms our pledge of global awareness and positive environmental action to protect nature and planet Earth which we took four decades back. This year’s theme ‘Small Islands and Climate Change’ has put the focus on the climate change and its impact on the landmasses vulnerable to the rising sea level around the world. The slogan ‘Raise The Voice Not The Sea Level’ gives us the perspective to take action and expectations from each individual towards the ever growing menace of climate change and its catastrophic repercussions.
It is indeed heartening to note that the small state of ours and its people, over the years are in the forefront to the cause of environmental protection and preservation. We owe this to our forefathers and ancestors who have given this wisdom in the form of tradition and heritage. Our conviction towards protection of rich biodiversity and ecology endowed by our mother nature has strengthened with each passing year as we celebrate World Environment Day.
The sustained green initiatives and policies taken by the State Government over the last two decades has transformed our state into a champion State in the country towards this cause. It is reassuring to note that the green initiatives such as ‘Ten Minutes to Earth’ pioneered by the State is well received by its people, polity and more importantly the students with passion and pride, resulting in massive increase in our forest cover. The regular feature of Sikkim’s schools receiving prestigious Green Awards from the national and international platform over the last five years has only reflected the inclusive and sustained campaign with eco-friendly policies of the State Government.
I sincerely feel that our biggest achievement has been that we have been able to inculcate and instil the sense of belongingness and responsibility towards environment in the young minds which is sutr to ensure that our identity as the most environment friendly State will continue to remain so in the days to come. I compliment my fellow Sikkimese on this wonderful achievement.
On this day, let us renew our pledge that we will never let our persistence falter in our effort to contribute towards this global cause. That we will remain consistent to strive forward with greater passion, energy and zeal for the cause of our environment.”
