Namthang-Rateypani gets two additional IRBn platoons
NAMCHI, 06 Apr [IPR]: The Superintendent of Police South, Sonam Gyatso Bhutia who is looking after the overall Law & Order preparedness of South District shared the latest development on the general law and order scenario of South Sikkim and the precautionary measures taken by the South District Police Department to maintain law and order here.
Talking on the arrangement of security arrangement in the district for the General Elections 2014, the SP informed that 3 companies and 1 platoon of West Bengal Armed Police (WBAP) along with 2 platoons of IRBn and 1 section have been deployed here in South District. All of the deployed forces are taking their routine rounds to ensure peace and security at all locations, said Mr Gyatso.
WBAP has also been deployed in all the Police Stations of South Sikkim and an extra platoon of IRBn has been stationed at Melli Constituency, he added.
Speaking on the recent law and order situation in some areas of South Sikkim, he said that the South Police Administration had requested higher authorities for addition of IRBn forces to control the law and order situation following which 2 platoons of IRBn was added which are stationed in Namthang under Namthang Rateypani Constituency.
Namthang has been identified as one of the critical areas in terms of law and order he stated. There have been cases of minor clashes between two political parties in the past days nevertheless which has been taken care in a tactful manner by the Police Administration.
SP South emphasized that strong action will be taken against those who take law into their hands and action will be taken across political lines on this matter.
“We will ensure the maintenance of peace and take every step to conduct the General Election 2014 in a peaceful atmosphere and we are confident that this election will be conducted peacefully,” said the SP South.
He further mentioned that all the SHOs and SDPOs of respective areas are all on their toes taking their rounds regularly to ensure that the election is conducted peacefully without causing any law and order inconvenience to the public. Talking about the sensitive areas, he informed that Namthang Rateypani has been identified as a law & order sensitive area in the South District.
He has assured to facilitate peace and security through the District Police Administration in South Sikkim to eradicate any kind of panic or uncertainty amongst the public.
Mr Gyatso stated that this time the Poll is different from the previous Polls conducted in Sikkim in terms of precautionary measures for which this elections, stringent steps are being applied like deployment of 16 Sector Magistrates with 16 Flying Squads, Static Surveillance Team, Expenditure Monitoring Team, Videography Team in all the areas of the District and these Teams are inspecting the meetings and activities of all political parties, and checking their vehicles as well every day till the polling process is complete. These teams are also monitoring the violation of MCC (model of code of conduct).
SDPO (HQ) Gegee Norbu was also present to share few points on the above matter.
