6 SDF supporters killed in road mishap in South Sikkim

NAMCHI, 08 Apr: In a tragic road mishap this morning at Gufadara near Borong under Barfung constituency in South Sikkim, six SDF supporters lost their lives while 7 others suffered grievous injuries.
The SDF supporters from Upper Polok were travelling in a Mahindra Maxx to a casual gathering of party workers at Phamtam when the driver lost control of the vehicle near Gufadara and the vehicle fell off the road around 100 feet.
The accident occurred at around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Five passengers died on the spot while one succumbed to injuries at Namchi hospital. Some of the injured were airlifted from Namchi Helipad to Siliguri for treatment.
Among the deceased are Top Tshering Bhutia [60], his wife Nimzen Bhutia [60], Karna Bdr. Lamichaney [59], Cheden Bhutia [80], Hem Kumari Biswakarma [46] and Gaki Bhutia [50].
Those injured in the accident are driver, Navin Rai [22], Lakpa Bhutia [17], Amar Das Kami [36], Santa Kumari Thatal [27], Biren Thatal [27], Krishna Bahadur Kami [28] and Kumba Lal Biswakarma [18].
A case has been registered at Ravangla PS as Case No. 12(04)14 dated 8/ 4/ 14 US 279/ 338/ 304A IPC against Navin Rai the driver of the vehicle. The post mortem of the deceased was conducted at Namchi Hospital.
Meanwhile, Sikkim Democratic Front and its president Pawan Chamling have expressed sorrow and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families on the passing away of six active workers of the party.
Mr. Chamling has conveyed that the accident has wreaked a great loss on the party and the Sikkimese society. He has directed the party to extend all possible support to the bereaved families.
An SDF press release reiterates the deep sense of shock and sorrow in the party over the deaths.
The party has also wished for the quick recovery of the survivors and assured all assistance and support in their treatment.
