GANGTOK, 07 Apr: ATMA North Sikkim organized a training on “Organic Cultivation practices of Ginger” was conducted on 04-05 April at Tingda village. Ginger growers of Kabi-Tingda had requested the concerned Organization for an intensive training on Ginger, the main cash crop of the area after Large Cardamom.
A press release informs that the training was attended by 65 Ginger growers of the surrounding villages and had Deputy Project Director, Tsering Norbu Bhutia as a Resource Person apart from BTM, Kabi Block, Norbu Doma Bhutia and Horticulture VLW of Kabi, Sangay Bhutia and Field staff of ICS, Kabi.
The programme started with a welcome address by Kabi BTM, after which the Resource person highlighted the various aspects of scientific cultivation practices of Ginger by using Organic means and the beneficial impact it will have on the overall health of the plant as well as that of the soil and the environment. Mr. Bhutia dealt in detail about the Seed Rate, dose and types of manure that the farmers have to apply at the time of sowing of seed rhizomes, and importance of inter-cultural operations for successful Ginger cultivation.
In the later part of the training, farmers were told about the effective and proven organic management practices of Pests and Diseases of Ginger. In this regard, the farmers have requested the officials to visit their field after the election for Field Surveillance and Method Demonstration of preparation of fungicide, Bordeaux Mixture which has been found to be quite effective in management of Soft Rot or Rhizome Rot disease of Ginger, the release mentions.
