GANGTOK, 14 July: The Sikkim Krantikari
Morcha has reacted sharply to the steep hike in tuition fees at government
colleges.
TN Dhakal, a senior SKM leader who had
contested the Lok Sabha elections on an SKM ticket, said that the hike of around
300% was a demonstration of “state brutality”. The steep hike in fees amounted
to discouraging the students from pursuing higher studies, stated Mr. Dhakal.
“Education is necessary for the development
of the state and students are our future; they will carry our legacy forward.
They have a right to education,” stated Mr. Dhakal while speaking to NOW! He
said that instead of facilitating education and the future of the students, the
SDF government, which was now in its fifth term, had “lost its sense of
direction and was on a negative mode”.
