GANGTOK, 16 July: In view of the disturbed law and order situation, the Human Resource Development Department [HRDD] has shut down all government schools and colleges for one week.
Speaking to NOW! today, Principal Secretary [HRDD], Dr Thomas Chandy, informed that the Department had taken the decision to shut down all the Government schools for a period of one week [from 16 – 23 July].
“The security of the students is of utmost importance for us and safe passage of students while returning from schools has made it necessary for the department to take the necessary step. Till we are sure that the situation has been brought under control and there is no danger to the lives of the children we have decided to close down the schools,” he explained.
There is usually no problem for the children in the mornings while going to schools but when the children are returning home in the evenings, we need to be sure that they have safe passage without any incidents, the Secretary stated and added that the department had even advised the private schools to shut down looking at the situation at hand.
“The private schools can review the situation after a few days and can start operating their schools if they feel that there is no danger for the children. Looking at the situation we have even shut down the government schools and colleges for one week,” he stated.
