NAMCHI, 11 July: The Sumbuk Gram Vikas Kendra carried out coffee plantation at Mellidara Paiyong GPU under MGNREGA in convergence with the Horticulture & Cash Crop Department on 10 July. The plantation is being done on pilot basis in the State and is projected to be upscaled to other places in the future.
The saplings were provided by the Horticulture Department while digging of pits and plantation was done under MGNREGA.
The South Zilla Adhakshya, Zilla Panchayat member of Mellidara TC, Panchayat President, Panchayat Secretary, including other members, ADC Dev ( Namchi), Additional Director, HCCD, Joint Director HCCD, GVA Sumbuk, HDO attended the kick off programme.
The coffee plantation programme will be receiving special support and consultancy from the Ladakhi Group of Companies which will also provide the market as they themselves will buy back the produce at competitive rates. An agreement to this effect will also be drawn up between the growers and the company. Lewllyn A Tripp, the Technical Coffee Advisor of Ladakhi Group was also present. He gave orientation to the farmers on the basics of coffee plantations.
A total of 41 beneficiaries form the GPU were covered under this programme.
