GANGTOK, 03 July: A six-member Sikkim Chess Association [SCA] team is all set to represent Sikkim at the 1st Lord Buddha FIDE-Rated Below 2000 Chess Tournament scheduled to be held in Gaya, Bihar, from 05 to 09 July. The team will be leaving for the tournament on Friday.
The state team has Rahul Gurung, Sushmita Lama, Priya Chettri, Rohit Gurung, Thendup Tamang and Chetiz Rai. All six are FIDE-rated players. The team will be accompanied by SCA general secretary, Mahendra Dhakal, who will also be serving the tournament as an Arbiter.
Mr. Dhakal shared that the team is in high spirits and fully prepared to win medals and improve their FIDE rating in the tournament. He adds that the team has undergone rigorous training sessions to prepare for the tournament.
Soon after this tournament, an SCA team will also be participating in the 1st edition of Asom FIDE Rating Open Chess Tournament scheduled to be held from 15 to 20 July at Guwahati in Assam.
Mr Dhakal informs that thus far, only the participation of Rakesh Gurung, Rahul Gurung and Rohit Gurung is confirmed and rest of the team will be finalized soon.
