GANGTOK, 03 July: Ninety year old Chandra Das Rai, who retired as a journalist, but served full tenures as a bureaucrat and politician before that, was also instrumental in the establishment of APATAN Sahitya, a pioneering literary institution of Sikkim in the Sixties, an involvement that has secured him the Bhanu Puraskar this year on the prestigious 200th Bhanu Jayanti.
The Executive Committee of the Nepali Sahitya Parishad, Sikkim, which confers the award, unanimously endorsed Mr. Rai’s name for the award at a meeting chaired by its president Paras Mani Dhangal here at the Parishad Bhawan.
Nepali Sahitya Parishad, Sikkim, it is informed, had constituted two tier selection committee including a former Bhanu Puraskar recipient and two other literary figures, and another tier with a national awardee in literature, one Bhanu Purashkar awardee and one literary figure.
The award will be conferred on Bhanu Jayanti, 13 July, at Manan Kendra during the function which is also expected to be addressed by Chief Minister Pawan Chamling and Governor Shriniwas Patil. The Bhanu Puraskar was constituted in 1985 and comprises of a cash prize of Rs. 25,001, a citation and a shawl.
Besides this, the Nepali Sahitya Parishad has also decided to confer the Bhasa Sewa Sri Samaan on Binita Rai; Sangeet Sri Samaan to Jagadish Sharma; Chitrakarita Sri Samaan on Homnath Mishra; Patrakarita Sri Samman to Rudra Kaushik [West District correspondent of Samay Danaik]; Natya Sri Samman on Bimal Kafley and Sahitya Sri Samman to Binashri Kharel.
