GANGTOK, 22 July: Bharatiya Janta Party Sikkim state-unit legal cell convener, NB Khatiwada has demanded that there be a CBI investigation or judicial probe into the recent incidents of violence in the state. He, like SKM earlier and a section of the students, also rejected the one-man committee set up by the State government.
Addressing a press conference today, Mr. Khatiwada supported the demands of the students and stated that the demand for the suspension of the SP East and SHO Sadar Thana until the probe and enquiry is over was a legitimate demand. Conveying the party’s support to the students, he stated that the party condemns and does not support the violence and arson that took place in the state.
He blamed the state government for inviting the agitation with the fee hike and police action for worsening the situation.
Mr, Khatiwada said that he along with the BJP state-unit president called on the Minister for State Home Affairs at New Delhi on 15 July wherein they informed him of the situation in Sikkim. The MoS immediately directed the Home Secretary to take action on it who then asked the Chief Secretary of Sikkim to submit a report to the Ministry, he stated.
Mr Khatiwada claims that at a second meeting with the Minister for State, he was informed that in the report to the Ministry submitted by the CS it was stated that the students jammed the National Highway, torched Army vehicles and that the students’ agitation was provoked and supported by Maoists amongst others. This, it may be recalled, was claimed in some media reports and has been denied and condemned by the State administration.
Mr Khatiwada however insists that such a report has been sent.
