Nathula tourists and traders stranded as JN Marg collapses, again

GANGTOK, 22 July: Tourists returning from Nathula along with border traders were stranded this afternoon between 17th and 15th Mile on JN Marg [to Tsomgo and Nathula]. The road was blocked by heavy landslides along this stretch in the afternoon.
BRO officials confirmed that around 25 vehicles with 130 people on board are stranded on this stretch and have been evacuated by the army to its transit camp nearby.
With the road unlikely to be cleared tonight, the tourists and traders will be hosted by the army. BRO officials inform that heavy rainfall is keeping the slides dangerously active, making clearing operations difficult.
BRO road gangs are expected to be deployed afresh to the slide zone Wednesday morning and road, weather permitting, expected to be cleared by noon.
