ASSA appeals for schools and colleges to be reopened

NAMCHI, 23 July: The All Sikkim Students’ Association [ASSA] today appealed to the State Government and the HRD Department to resume classes at government colleges and schools immediately. Classes have been suspended, it may be recalled, till 31 July across the State in the wake of the college students protest in Gangtok.
The ASSA members, led by their vice-president, were joined by representatives from Sikkim Students’ Welfare Association of Namchi Government College to the press conference.
The students called for peace in Gangtok and urged that the like other districts, peace should prevail in East Sikkim as well.
They also thanked the State Government and the HRD Department for the announcement to provide free education to students till college level.
About the developments in Gangtok, the students said that the demand was right and have now been met because the students stayed united. They did however condemn the violence and called on parents and guardians to keep their wards away from negative influences.
They have also called on the State Government to develop the necessary and required infrastructure at colleges and schools.
