GANGTOK, 22 July: Kabi Lungchok MLA, Ugen Nedup Bhutia called on the HRDD Minister, RB Subba at his office on Monday and appraised him about the scarcity of teachers in schools of North district.
Mr Bhutia provided a list of 51 vacancies for teachers in different schools of the district and added that there could be more schools which lack teachers, as per a press release.
He further said that despite the already existing scarcity of teachers in the North district, the recent mass teacher transfer order [which the HRDD has denied and since repealed] effects transfers of many existing teachers from the district to other parts of the state.
The MLA demanded that such transfers be put on hold till the requirement of teachers in the entire district was fulfilled, and arrangements be made for appointment of local educated youth as teachers in such schools as per government provisions and norms, put a permanent bar on the practice of effecting transfer of teachers during mid-academic session and considerate approach towards teachers who are old or have medical conditions in terms of postings and transfers.
The Minister gave a patient hearing to the MLA and assured of all possible support and cooperation, the release mentions.
