GANGTOK, 22 July: Sikkim chess players defeated two International Masters at the 1st edition of the Asom FIDE Rating Open Chess Tournament held at Guwahati in Assam from 15 to 20 July. The Sikkim players were unable to win any prizes, but their defeat of International Masters was the highlight of the tournament.
A four-member Sikkim Chess Association team led by general secretary and international arbiter, Mahendra Dhakal represented the state in the tournament. Sikkim's Rakesh Gurung defeated IM from Maharashtra, K Sameer while Rahul Gurung defeated IM from Tamil Nadu, S Nitin.
Speaking to media persons, Mr Dhakal said, "To defeat IMs in the tournament was a great achievement for the state players than to win any prize". He mentioned that the state has no International Master so far but if the players continue to give such performances then the state would have many IMs and Grand Masters in the near future, he added.
