GANGTOK, 28 Nov: A meeting of Akhil Kirat Rai Sangh (AKRS), Sikkim was held under the chairmanship of Political Secretary to the Chief Minister, KN Rai, at his residence to discuss the Tableau of the Rai community which is scheduled to be included in the Republic Day parade in New Delhi next year, informs a press release.
At the meeting, Advisor to PHE, KB Chamling, president AKRS, Dr. SK Rai, Mohan Dungmali and MLAs BB Rai and Tulsi Devi Rai were also present. On behalf of AKRS, KN Rai thanked the Chief Minister for giving an opportunity to present a ‘tableau’ of the Rai community at the national level on the occasion of Republic Day.
The meeting discussed the traditional and customary traits, structures, distinctiveness and especially the Silli dance. Mr Rai also said that since the Rai community has got the opportunity to present a tableau, it should represent Sikkim at large.
The meeting also passed a resolution to request the central government to allow around 24 to 50 participants for the event. The association will be sending a letter to New Delhi on the same through the Culture department, the release mentions.
Addressing the gathering, KB Chamling suggested that there should be a small modification in the ‘suruwal’ of the male Rai costume, which the gathering appreciated. Outfits and ornaments for the members who are participating in the event will be scrutinised by a committee under KB Chamling along with Santosh Rai, MK Rai, DK Rai, and Tulsi Devi Rai.
KN Rai in his address, suggested that a complete blend of traditional and age old paraphernalia like the Wabuk, Fish net, etc, associated with the community should be showcased. For the above, each and every member has to work together and the opportunity should be used as a platform towards securing tribal status for the community, he added.
Similarly, Sagar Rai, choreographer for Silli dance said that dancers from all the 3 districts will be trained in South Sikkim in order to present a meaningful and energetic Silli dance at the event. The meeting also decided to collect all necessary ornaments and outfits, the release further mentions.
HB Rai, MK Rai, Dr. CB Rai, DK Rai, Bikram Rai, Sanjeev Rai and Ashit Rai were also present at the meeting while the follow-up of the meeting will be held on 04 Dec in South Sikkim, the release adds.
