AKRS plans 2-day Sakewa celebrations in May

GANGTOK, 24 April: The Akhil Kirat Rai Sangh Sikkim has announced plans to organise a 2-day celebration of the Rai festival of Sakewa on 22 and 23 May. This was decided at an AKRS meeting held at the South District Administrative Centre conference hall  on Friday. The meeting was chaired by Tea Board chairperson Gagan Rai accompanied by the Namchi-Singhithang MLA, Binod Rai, informs an AKRS press release.

The meeting decided that on the first day of the Sakewa celebrations, a seminar will be held to deliberate on the language and rituals of the Rais along with a block-level Silli dance competition. For the seminar, resources person will be invited over from Nepal.
The meeting also decided to organise a shobha yatra from Kopchey via Namchi Bazzar to the main venue of the celebration, Bhaichung Stadium, on the second day of the celebrations.
Accordingly, thirty committees were formed to prepare for the celebrations with the Namchi-Singhithang MLA as the overall in-charge, the release informs.
The meeting also discussed the various stalls that could be put up as part of the celebrations. These range from traditional food stalls, a stall of antiques, costumes and a Rai book stall and an art exhibition.
The organisers propose to invite the Chief Minister as the chief guest of the celebrations.
