GANGTOK, 22 April: Royal Plaza and Casino Sikkim have stepped up for sports in Sikkim and associated with the United Sikkim Football Club [USFC] as co-sponsors. This makes the sister organisations, the first local corporate house in Sikkim to come forward and support a local club as a co-sponsor on such a substantial scale.
This was announced by the Director of Royal Plaza, Naresh Subba, at a press conference today which was also attended by Indian skipper and USFC co-owner, Bhaichung Bhutia, USFC co-owner, Navneet Sharma, the CEO of Dubai-based Fidelis World.
Addressing the conference, Bhaichung shared that he was delighted to have a local corporate house of Sikkim support his club in such a forthcoming manner. While expressing his gratitude towards Mr Subba and his company, he expressed hopes of establishing a long-term association with these houses.
He also expressed hope that other corporate houses in Sikkim would also extend similar support to the club.
“The second and final round is difficult, but the team is all set to give its best in the tournament as my target is to promote the club in the north-eastern region and in the country,” Bhaichung said.
Bhaichung’s United Sikkim, it may be recalled, debuted in the second division I-League only this season and topped its pool, qualifying to play in the final round of eight from which two teams will qualify to ply in the main, first division I-League.
“The team will pull no stops in the final round to reach the main round of the I-League and we will not let the state down,” assured Bhaichung.
Conveying his gratitude to Chief Minister and the State government for supporting the club, Bhaichung also appealed to all Sikkimese to extend moral support to the club in its upcoming challenge.
Mr Subba, in turn, expressed his happiness on being the first local corporate house to support the club and further called upon other corporate houses hereto do the same.
Mr Sharma of Fidelis World said that he was happy to be associated with the USFC and for being able to support the vision and dream of Bhaichung.
He mentioned that the training camp in Gangtok went off well and proved good conditioning for the final round scheduled to be played in Shillong which has weather similar to Gangtok.
Addressing media queries, Bhaichung informed that he and Rennedy Singh were still recovering from their injuries so there is some uncertainty as to whether they would be able to play full matches even in the final round.
“Although the presence of Rennedy Singh is a huge positive and an encouraging factor for the team, but even without us the team has played well in the qualifying rounds,” he said, endorsing the manner in which the team has performed.
Bhaichung furthermentioned that home-crowd support for Shillong-based clubs at the tournament would not deter USFC players as they are experienced enough to handle such situations.
The team is leaving on 24 April for Shillong.
