GANGTOK, 25 May: Students Organisation for Social Assistance [SOSA], an apolitical and a non-profit group formed by the students of Sikkim University, organised an anti-rape awareness program in Gangtok on Saturday.
A press release informs that the group was formed on 04 May 2014 and it campaigns on the motto, “of the society, for the society”. The organization primarily strives to address the various social crises of the contemporary society and help the society overcome social problems through awareness and motivational programs. This exercise also helps the students of different academic backgrounds to come together with diverse perspectives and unitedly work for the benefit of the society at large.
On Saturday the program started with a “clap rally” from Denzong cinema hall to Tourism Department at M.G Marg. The other events of the program included pamphlet distribution, street play, signature campaign and a musical peace procession where the group sang their self-composed song ‘Balatkar ko birod garaw’ [protest rape].
The members of the group had contributed voluntarily to organise today’s program. Dr. Swati A. Sachdeva, Dr. Mona Chettri, Dr. Binu Sundas and many other well-wishers of the group also came forward to participate in the road show, the release mentions.
The organisation is thankful to the Gangtok Municipal Corporation, the Urban Development and Housing Department and the Police Department for their help in making SOSA’s debut program a success. The organisation also looks forward to visit other towns and villages of the state and spread the awareness on various social problems like rape, suicide, school dropouts, drug addiction and so forth, the release adds.
