SNPP welcomes govt’s decision on CoI

GANGTOK, 26 May: Sikkim National People’s Party [SNPP] has welcomed the state government’s move to make Sikkim Subject Certificate or Certificate of Identification mandatory for issuing driving license, permits for taxi or trucks, hawker license or any contractual works.
While addressing the media here at Gangtok today, Biraj Adhikari and Delay Namgyal Barfungpa of SNPP welcomed the government decision stating that this was the correct interpretation of the Constitution of India and provisions under Article 371F.
Appealing to every Sikkimese to support this initiative, they however, also accused the SDF government of dilution of these very same laws in the past.
Stating that SNPP will support all initiatives for the protection of Sikkimese rights, the duo also expressed apprehensions about the procedure adopted to enforce these laws and demanded firmness on the part of the state government in implementing them. They added that the dignity and rights of the non-Sikkimese should be kept in mind while implementing these laws.
The people of Sikkim have to realize that the whole exercise of Article 371F is to recognize the special identity as well as ratify Sikkim’s autonomy, they said, further adding that these recent initiatives by the new Chamling Government are totally in line with the spirit of the constitutional provisions guaranteed under the Constitution of India.
The government should act and maintain the spirit of 8th May tripartite agreement, the duo stated.    At the same time, Biraj Adhikari has once again raised the issue of fake Certificate of Identification and demanded punitive action against the fake certificate holders as per law. Otherwise, the government’s efforts would ring hollow especially at a time when Sikkim is supporting the government’s initiatives, they added.
