South Sikkim observes World Disability Day


NAMCHI, 04 Dec: The World Disability Day was celebrated yesterday at Namchi Block Administrative Centre (BAC) auditorium hall with a special function organized by the Inclusive Education Cell Sarva Siksha Abhiyan under HRDD South.

The theme of the Day this year was ‘Together for a Better World for all - including persons with disabilities in development’ and had the Chairman, Namchi Municipal Council, BT Tamang, present as chief guest accompanied by Vice Chairman NH Ansari as special guest.
The programme started with a rally by the students, resource teachers, guests and members of All Sikkim Students Association (ASSA) ending at the venue of the programme. Students with various disabilities from all the BACs under South District attended the programme.
During the programme, one of the resource teachers, Rinzing Lepcha highlighted the importance of the day, delving on the fundamental rights of every disabled person, which she stressed, were equal to that of any other citizen.
The HRDD Deputy Director here, TM Moktan, spoke on the World Disability Day celebration and congratulated the students for giving a good performance.
Special guest, Mr. Ansari, in his address, said that the participation of students in the programme was a positive development since many had come from far-off places of South District to participate in the District-level celebration and appreciated the work done by the concerned department.
The chief guest, in turn, said that this day was an opportunity to support an important social cause. He thanked the teachers for investing time for the disabled children and their welfare.
During the course of the programme, an Inclusive Painting Competition was also held among the students on the topic of inclusive school compound in two categories - Junior and Senior - in which Suman Subba of class XII of Namchi Senior Secondary School was adjudged the winner in the senior category while Aishwarya Sharma of class VII of Temi Secondary School was adjudged as the winner in the junior category.
The programme included a group songs, solo songs and dance presentations by the disabled children. All students participated in one or the other way in the day’s programme.
