GANGTOK, 04 Dec: Subha Laxmi Social Organization [SLSO], a Gangtok-based NGO, plans to construct a home for orphans and children in need here. In order to raise funds for the same, the organisation has announced a raffle draw.
Addressing a press conference on Saturday, SLSO president, Lalita Lama, informed that the main aim of the raffle is to raise funds to establish a home for needy children. The organisation has fixed 25 May 2012 as the draw date of the raffle which has a Nano car as the first prize, a motorcycle as the second prize , a plasma TV set as third , music system as fourth , and five mobile phones as consolation prizes.
“Since I take care of the children who are unfortunately without parents I try to put my whole effort in this service. The children are living with me and since I stay in a rented accommodation, it is not always easy and hence I wish to construct a home for them,” said Ms Lama.
She plans to construct a two-storied building to accommodate around 40 children and has already identified a plot of land in Chandmari for it. She further informed that of late even neglected elderly people were approaching her and she also plans to accommodate such persons in the home.
Ms Lama invited people to come forward to support the cause and help out the neglected and orphaned.
SLSO was formed in 2008 and at present there are 21 children from 2 to 14 years old under the organization out of which 12 stay at Ms Lama’s rented house in Gangtok. She informed that the rest of the children are with families who came forward to take full responsibility of the children and the organisation has been continuously monitoring these children.
Of the 21 children, some are going to ICDS schools while others are attending schools around Gangtok for which teachers of their respective schools have taken the responsibility.
Apart from that, the organization is also providing capacity building training in jute bag making, screen printing and other skills to unemployed women. The organisation has 23 members at present.
She also expressed her deep gratitude on behalf of her organisation to Nima Lama of Mother Queen Enterprise, Ranipool, and Shabir Ahmed of Nice Expo for their consistent support in SLSO’s various causes.
The cost of the raffle ticket is Rs 100, and SLSO urges people to support the organisation by buying these tickets.
