GANGTOK, 06 July: Sikkim Krantikari Morcha has rejected explanations given by the Agriculture Department on the allegations leveled by Martam-Rumtek MLA, Dr Mechung Bhutia that seeds laced with chemicals were being distributed in contravention of Organic Farming norms.
At a joint press conference held today, the SKM MLAs further announced their decision to write to all personalities [like Aamir Khan and PM Modi] who have praised and endorsed the Sikkim Organic Mission. The SKM MLAs alleged that the state government has been praising itself for being the organic but has been supplying seeds and manure which were totally inorganic.
Addressing a press conference today, Dr Bhutia mentioned that the SKM party will going to write to the Prime Minister, the Governor of Sikkim and producers of Satyamev Jayate, informing them of his and his party’s allegations questioning Sikkim’s organic credentials.
He also alleged lack of coordination and support between Panchayats, farmers and other stakeholders on the mission. He also alleged that at least 80% of the fields in Sikkim which have already received organic certification will fail the criteria of being organic if they were tested again.
