GANGTOK, 06 July [IPR]: Sikkim State Cooperative Union (SICUN) observed United Nations International Day of Cooperatives for the first time in the history of Sikkim, here at the conference hall of Sahakari Bhawan on 05 July.
On the occasion, a seminar was organized on this year's theme "Cooperative enterprises achieve sustainable development for all". The seminar was presided over by Chairman of Sikkim Cooperative Milk Union, MB Rai.
Addressing the programme the Chairman encouraged the gathering to prepare human resource for the cooperative movement in the state. He further urged the participants to disseminate knowledge and valuable information about cooperatives at the grass root level.
MD Sikkim Cooperative Milk Union, P S Kumar thanked SICUN for providing an opportunity to share and exchange ideas and achievements on a periodical basis. Stressing on commitment and quality products he highlighted on the need of scale and skill development to meet the increasing demand of customers.
MD, Denzong Agriculture Cooperative Society also briefed about DACS profile, its functioning, items marketed and clients, distribution of dividend, price support, membership status and challenges.
Emphasizing on the importance of celebrating the International cooperative day, President of SICUN, Ganesh Kr. Rai said that the day is observed to initiate comprehensive awareness about the objectives of cooperatives. He assured of SICUN's efforts to connect people with the cooperative movement at the grass root level. He further stressed on achieving sustainable development through cooperative activities.
The programme was also addressed by Registrar Cooperative Service R.K. Gautam wherein he urged SICUN to inform people on scope of marketing. Furthermore, he urged SICUN to make optimum use of the new infrastructure.
AGM SISCO Bank, Bikash Rai underlined the activities to be carried out at the community level. He focused on the need of extensive awareness and also highlighted various initiatives undertaken by SISCO Bank.
Presenting the key note address, Suresh Tamang [Astt. Lecturer, Namchi Govt. College] emphasized on three levels of cooperative movement i.e global level, national level and local level. He also informed about the achievements and success stories of cooperatives to encourage in establishing efficient cooperative societies in the state.
