GANGTOK, 12 Dec: Missing their frontman, lead vocalist Girish Pradhan, away on a Hong Kong gig, Girish ‘n the Chornicles, still pulled off an impressive debut at one the country’s biggest rock competitions, “Hornbill Rock” in Nagaland recently. Apart from securing the second runners-up position, two significant individual achievements also came the band’s way when Suraj Karki won the Best Guitarist award and Abhishek Gurung, originally of “Cynical Recess” and with the band for Hornbill Rock, lifted the Best Vocalist honours.
Hornbill Festival, a renowned cultural and musical festival held in Nagaland annually, brought in the leading bands of the country for the Rock showdown. 130 bands auditioned for the contest and the 24 best were selected.
With Girish away, the band roped in Abhishek Gurung (Cynical Recess) on vocals and Lokesh Mangar (Still Waters) on bass, Suraj Karki and Yogesh Pradhan on the guitars and Nagen Mogranti on the drums.
The contest was held from the 04 to 07 December and the first three days featured bands from New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Shillong, Guwahati, Kolkata, Mizoram, Darjeeling, Nagaland, Pune and more. On the final day, the line-up of 24 bands was whittled down to the best 9, Girisn ‘n the Chronicles aong them.
The final showdown was a breathless 5 hour marathon, and when the results were declared, the Gangtok band was declared the second runners up. Indigo Children came in first followed by “Grammy Winning Effort”.
